Peritonitis

I was, once again, technically hospitalised at the Singapore General Hospital from 8 August 2024 to 18 September 2024. Technically, because I spent the first two weeks in SGH, but spent the next three to four weeks at home. At SGH, I was taken care of by the teams from Cardiology, Renal, Infectious Disease, and Internal Medicine. For the remaining time, I received treatment from SGH Family Medicine (FMCC). I had two teams of doctors and nurses looking after me, one from Speedoc and the other from FMCC.

The ordeal started with the most crippling stomach cramps. All afternoon, I lay in bed, gripping my stomach and thinking that the grim reaper was finally going to get me. Daniel checked my drainage fluid and took a couple of photos for me. To my horror, the fluid looked like root beer, dark coloured and frothy. I realised that I needed to go to the hospital.

During the first two weeks at SGH, doctors started me on a variety of intravenous antibiotics in combination with oral ones. When the doctors finally decided on the type of antibiotics and dosage to administer, this began four weeks of aggressive intravenous antibiotics treatment.

At first, I was ready to spend the entire six weeks in SGH, however, two weeks into the stay, I found myself deliriously homesick. The lack of sleep sent me into a cranky mood, and I pleaded with my doctors to send me home.

That was when FMCC stepped in and took over. With my medication and regime confirmed, I was sent home with the support of FMCC. For four weeks, nurses from FMCC and Speedoc took turns to visit us twice a day to administer the intravenous antibiotics.

Every morning, doctors visited as though they were on their rounds. I was well taken care of. At home, I regained my cheerfulness and positivity. In a nutshell, I was very happy and grateful for the support accorded to us by FMCC and Speedoc. Getting well was a lot more pleasant at home.
